Arjun is a consultant cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre (BHC), St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and at University College London Hospital (UCLH) and honorary senior lecturer (associate professor) at University College London (UCL) and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
Arjun graduated with a gold medal from Calcutta National Medical College in 2002. After completing his internship, he came to the UK in 2004 and started working at Prestwick and Ayr. He completed his MRCP in 2007 and secured a place on the highly competitive North West Thames Cardiology training rotation in 2008. During his cardiology training, he completed a multiple international and national award-winning PhD on life course cardiology from Imperial College London in 2013. His work was displayed at the UK Houses of Parliament and was featured in national and international media. He subspecialised in heart failure and advanced cardiac imaging culminating in the MRCP (Cardiology) award in 2016.
As a final year trainee, he helped set up cardio-oncology services at Europe’s largest cardiac centre (BHC) and Europe’s largest cancer centre (UCLH). This work culminated in becoming the first consultant cardiologist in the UK to be appointed in cardio-oncology in 2018. Arjun is currently the clinical lead of the UCLH Cardio-Oncology service and is part of the cardio-oncology service at BHC and the advanced cardiac imaging services at both sites.
He has published widely in the field and in recognition of his contribution to cardio-oncology he has been competitively appointed to the Cardio-Oncology Leadership Council of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). He is also a member of the Education Committee for the International Cardio-oncology Society (ICOS) helping shape the ICOS cardio-oncology examination and textbook. He is also the Lead for Education for the British Cardio-Oncology Society (BCOS) and runs the only national Cardio-Oncology Course and the only pan-European Cardio-Oncology course. He is also a member of the Cardio-Oncology Council of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Arjun has also recently become the co-host of the ICOS podcast.
Arjun is also actively involved in developing Cardio-Oncology curricula and guidelines and changing practice through the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE), BCOS, ICOS and UK Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC). He is joint-first author of upcoming BSE-BCOS cardio-oncology guidelines. He is active in cardio-oncology research and supervises several research trainees and fellows.
He has always had a keen interest in medical education. During his cardiology training, Arjun completed an MSc in Medical Education in 2012 from UCL and the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). He was awarded a Distinction in each of the three years, graduating top of his class in all 3 years. He was also awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2009. Apart from his educational activities at BCOS and ICOS, he is also in charge of Imaging and Heart Failure training at BHC and UCLH as well as being Director of the Foundation Programme at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Arjun also helps deliver pan-London heart failure training via the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM).
Arjun has also been heavily involved in management and leadership activities from his trainee years. He completed a 1-year paired learning management programme from Imperial NHS Trust in 2012 and then as a trainee set up the Senior Cardiology Management Course for trainees which ran for ten years. He has several local, national and international leadership positions including roles on the Education Committee and the Programme Committee of the British Cardiovascular Society.
In recognition of his contributions to cardiology and cardio-oncology, he has been awarded Fellowships of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), American College of Cardiology (FACC), European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and International Cardio-Oncology Society (FICOS).
