Director of Learning & Consultant in Acute Medicine

Akin is the Director of Learning at the Centre for International Medical Graduates. He has been an NHS consultant in Acute Medicine in England since 2012.

Before this, Akin graduated with an MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 2001. After Housemanship at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, he completed Emergency Medicine junior doctor training posts in the North East of England (2005-2006); ST1 and ST2 General medicine and specialty rotations in the West and South East Scotland Deaneries (2006-2008) during which he completed the MRCP(UK) diploma.

Subsequently, he undertook four years of Higher Specialist Training in Acute Internal Medicine across the West of Scotland (2008-2012), during which he taught regularly on the IMPACT® course of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Advanced Life Support (ALS) course of the Resuscitation Council UK.

Akin has been Head of Service for Emergency Medicine and Acute Medicine (2014-2017) in the NHS and is currently the Lead Physician for a countywide Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) service in Lincolnshire. In 2021, he was awarded Emergency and Critical Healthcare Professional of the Year at the National BAME Health and Care Awards in the UK.

He is committed to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and has taken on leadership roles where he was involved in the design and delivery of student/trainee-centred programmes in the NHS. He is Foundation Training Programme Director at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and has been Undergraduate Module Lead for Medicine and Honorary (Consultant) Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Nottingham until 2022. In 2016, he was a runner-up for Undergraduate Educator of the Year across the East Midlands (Health Education England). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Akin is a Panel Tutor in Medical Education at the Institute of Continuing Education, University of Cambridge where he completed a Master of Studies qualification (with Distinction) in Medical Education (Wolfson College, 2021). His Master’s dissertation explored the factors that influence belonging in international medical graduates in the workplace during hospital-based postgraduate medical training in the UK. In 2022, he completed the Leading Strategic Projects programme at Said Business School, University of Oxford.

Since October 2020, Akin has been lead facilitator on the Acute Medicine for International Medical Graduates (IMG) course alongside a team of NHS consultants. As Director of Learning, he has collaborated with educators across professions to design courses and programmes that support the induction and transition of IMGs in the UK. His expertise in medicine and medical education, along with a wide-ranging, contextual understanding of the IMG experience within the NHS, uniquely positions him to lead our work at the Centre for International Medical Graduates (2023 – 2025).
